Evarts
Evarts is a former settlement or camp in Walworth County, South Dakota, recorded by the USGS Geographic Names Information System.
What awaits
Founded in 1900 when a branch line of the Milwaukee Railroad came through the area. The town was named for Olive Evarts, spouse of Gene Overholser, a local landowner, who owned the land on which the train tracks were eventually laid. The town became an important cattle shipping point for the great cattle ranches located west of the Missouri River. A bridge built over the Missouri River nearby, dramatically reduced business needs in the community and it eventually faded to ghost town status. After this community was abandoned many of the buildings were moved to nearby Glenham. (SD-T17/p66,130)
