About the attraction

What awaits

Eskimo village visited in December 1878 by E. W. Nelson, U.S. Signal Service; name reported by him was “Agiukchugamute,” that is, “people of Agiukchuk,” name from Nelson, pertaining to a village of 35 inhabitants. U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (USC&GS) reported in 1949 that the village was abandoned and the site, often used for a fish camp, is now called “Monrak” or “Monroke.” The 1940 Census listed the place as Aguikchuk with 65 people, but this may refer to those who were at the fish camp or in the vicinity.
